Are Mormons Christians?

We talk of Christ, we rejoice in Christ, we preach of Christ, we prophesy of Christ, and we write according to our prophecies, that our children may know to what source they may look for a remission of their sins. (2Nephi25:26)

SALT LAKE CITY — The First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has released the official site location and an exterior rendering for the Norfolk Virginia Temple, marking a significant milestone for the growing Latter-day Saint community in the region.

Site Details and Specifications

The new house of the Lord will be constructed on a 23-acre site situated at the intersection of Harbour View Boulevard and Bridge Road in Suffolk, Virginia. According to project plans, the facility will feature:

  • An 18,850-square-foot, single-story temple.
  • An adjacent Distribution Center to serve local members.
  • Landscaped grounds designed to complement the surrounding Suffolk community.

This announcement reinforces the rapid growth of the Church in the Commonwealth, which is currently home to more than 100,000 members and approximately 210 congregations.

The Norfolk temple is one of four either operating, under construction, or announced within the state:

  • Richmond Virginia Temple: Dedicated in 2023.
  • Winchester Virginia Temple: Construction commenced in 2025.
  • Roanoke Virginia Temple: Announced and currently in the planning stages.
  • "Increased time in the temple will help us prepare for the Second Coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ," stated President Russell M. Nelson during the original announcement of the Norfolk temple in April 2025.

    Purpose of the Temple

Unlike local meetinghouses where weekly Sunday worship takes place, temples are considered "Houses of the Lord" where faithful members participate in sacred ceremonies, such as marriage, that unite families for eternity.

Detailed design plans for the Norfolk Virginia Temple are still in development, and a date for the groundbreaking ceremony will be announced in the coming months.
