| Elder Gérald Caussé Called as an Apostle |
In a significant announcement today from Salt Lake City, Elder Gérald Caussé has been called and ordained as the newest member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The calling took place on Thursday, November 6, 2025, with his ordination performed by President Dallin H. Oaks and the other members of the First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.
Elder Caussé, 62, brings a wealth of global experience to the Quorum, having served for over a decade in the Church’s Presiding Bishopric. His ascension to the apostleship marks a historic moment for Latter-day Saints across the globe, especially in Europe, as he is a native of Bordeaux, France.
“I’ve always had a testimony of Jesus Christ,” Elder Caussé shared on Thursday. “He’s always been in the center of my life. I know Jesus Christ lives. And I know He’s our Savior and Redeemer. What a wonderful thing it is to be a witness of Christ. That’s the best responsibility or stewardship we might have in our lives.”
The Sacred Charge of an Apostle
As an Apostle, Elder Caussé takes on the sacred and sobering mantle of being a special witness of the name of Christ throughout the world.
The Quorum of the Twelve Apostles is the second-highest presiding body in the Church’s administration, serving under the direction of the First Presidency. Their duties involve both ministering to members worldwide and overseeing the operation and development of the global Church.
From Presiding Bishop to Apostle: A Life of Service
Elder Caussé’s background showcases deep administrative experience paired with fervent personal faith.
Global Administration: Prior to this call, Elder Caussé was in his 11th year of service as the Church’s Presiding Bishop. He holds the distinction of being the third Presiding Bishop born outside the United States and the first for whom English is a second language.
Welfare and Facilities: The Presiding Bishopric manages crucial matters for the Church, including humanitarian aid, welfare programs, tithing and fast offerings, physical facilities, and membership records—experience that is invaluable to the Quorum.
General Authority Service: His decades of dedicated service also include time as a counselor in the Presiding Bishopric (2012–2015) and as a General Authority Seventy (2008–2012).
A European Heritage and Family Foundation
Born on May 20, 1963, Elder Caussé is a second-generation Latter-day Saint whose parents were baptized when he was an infant. While serving in Paris, he reconnected with and married Valérie Babin, whom he had known since childhood. Valérie is also a second-generation member.
Elder and Sister Caussé were married on August 5, 1986, in the Bern Switzerland Temple and are the parents of five children.
Sister Caussé, Valérie, spoke of their family's sacrifices during their calls abroad: “One of [our children] told us she cried every night, but she didn’t tell us anything besides encouragement. We’re so proud of them.” Elder Caussé added: “We admire them for being so consecrated. They never complained. They moved with us and changed life.”
Focus on the Rising Generation and God's Creations
In his ministry as a General Authority, Elder Caussé has been a powerful advocate for two key areas:
The Gathering of Israel: He has consistently encouraged young adults to recognize their essential role in the Lord’s work. In August 2025, he taught that “The Church needs you — not in spite of who you are, but because of who you are.”
Environmental Stewardship: He has also given significant addresses on caring for God’s creations, speaking on the Church’s approach to environmental sustainability. “Every disciple of Christ should feel the importance of blessing their families and the community in which they live,” he stated at a 2023 conference in Brazil.
Most recently, Elder Caussé has focused on the enduring hope found in the Savior. As he shared in his April 2025 general conference address:
“We have a loving Savior, and ‘we know that it is by [His] grace that we are saved, after all we can do’ (2 Nephi 25:23).”
As Elder Caussé steps into this new, sacred role, the Church welcomes his seasoned leadership, international perspective, and unwavering testimony as a new special witness of Jesus Christ to all the world.
