Are Mormons Christians?

We talk of Christ, we rejoice in Christ, we preach of Christ, we prophesy of Christ, and we write according to our prophecies, that our children may know to what source they may look for a remission of their sins. (2Nephi25:26)

New Leadership in the Quorum of the Twelve: President Dieter F. Uchtdorf Appointed as Acting President

President Dieter F. Uchtdorf of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

SALT LAKE CITY — January 8, 2026

In an official statement released today, the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced a significant leadership transition. Dieter F. Uchtdorf has been called to serve as the Acting President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.

The appointment follows the passing of the late President Jeffrey R. Holland on December 27, 2025. President Uchtdorf was officially set apart for this new role by Church President Dallin H. Oaks on Thursday, January 8, 2026.

Understanding the Role of the Quorum

The Quorum of the Twelve Apostles serves as the second-highest presiding body in the Church’s government. While their primary mission is to serve as special witnesses of the name of Christ across the globe, they also carry heavy administrative duties, overseeing the operations and development of the international Church.

The Quorum operates under the direct guidance of the First Presidency.

Why "Acting" President?

The Church follows a consistent practice for leadership: the senior member of the Quorum (by date of ordination) serves as the Quorum President.

Currently, President Henry B. Eyring is the most senior member and holds the title of President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. However, because President Eyring is currently serving as the First Counselor in the First Presidency, an "Acting President" is appointed to lead the Quorum’s daily operations.

President Uchtdorf now steps into this role, following the precedent set by previous leaders, including the late President Holland.

About President Uchtdorf

Known for his warmth, aviation metaphors, and deep faith, President Uchtdorf has served as an Apostle since October 2004. His transition into this leadership role marks a new chapter for the Quorum as they continue their ministry worldwide.
