Are Mormons Christians?

We talk of Christ, we rejoice in Christ, we preach of Christ, we prophesy of Christ, and we write according to our prophecies, that our children may know to what source they may look for a remission of their sins. (2Nephi25:26)

Leadership Presence and Dedication

Elder Patricio M. Giuffra, President of the Church’s Central America Area, presided over the ceremony alongside his wife, María. In his remarks, Elder Giuffra emphasized the sacred purpose of temples as houses of the Lord, places of refuge, and centers of worship. He reminded attendees that through ordinances performed in temples, God’s children receive blessings for themselves and on behalf of those who have passed away.

During the dedicatory prayer, Elder Giuffra expressed gratitude for the restored gospel of Jesus Christ and prayed for the people of Huehuetenango and surrounding communities. He asked that the temple’s presence inspire neighbors and visitors alike, awakening in them a desire to understand the significance of such a sacred edifice.

Voices of Faith and Hope

The ceremony featured heartfelt testimonies from local members. Scarleth Monserrath De León López, a young Latter-day Saint, shared how her faith deepens each time she enters a temple. She described temples as places of peace, light, and love, offering respite from the noise of the world. “Today, as we break ground, we rejoice with past and present generations,” she said. “This temple will be a beacon of light for Huehuetenango and the entire region.”

Wilmer Humberto Gutiérrez Galindo, one of the early pioneers of the Church in Huehuetenango, expressed profound gratitude for witnessing the groundbreaking. “Having a temple in our city is a sacred privilege, a true act of God’s mercy toward us,” he noted, underscoring the deep spiritual significance of the moment for local members.

Historical Context and Expansion in Guatemala

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints holds the groundbreaking ceremony for the Huehuetenango Guatemala Temple on Saturday, March 14, 2026, in Huehuetenango, Guatemala.

President Russell M. Nelson first announced the Huehuetenango Guatemala Temple during the Church’s October 2022 general conference. The temple joins a growing network of sacred structures in Guatemala, reflecting the faith’s expansion and commitment to serving its members in the region.

Currently, dedicated temples in Guatemala include those in Guatemala City, Quetzaltenango, and Cobán. The Miraflores Guatemala City Temple is under construction, while another temple in Retalhuleu has been announced. The addition of the Huehuetenango temple underscores the Church’s ongoing investment in spiritual infrastructure across Central America.

Membership and Community Impact

Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints sing "I Believe in Christ" during the groundbreaking ceremony for the Huehuetenango Guatemala Temple on Saturday, March 14, 2026, in Huehuetenango, Guatemala.

Guatemala is home to nearly 300,000 members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, organized into more than 430 congregations. For many, temples represent the pinnacle of worship and devotion. Unlike meetinghouses, which host weekly services and community activities open to all, temples are reserved for sacred ordinances such as eternal marriages and proxy baptisms for deceased ancestors.

Local leaders believe the Huehuetenango temple will not only serve the faithful but also stand as a symbol of peace and spiritual strength for the broader community. Elder Giuffra’s prayer highlighted this vision, asking that the temple’s influence extend beyond its walls to touch the lives of all who encounter it.

Looking Ahead

Once construction is completed, the Church will announce dates for a public open house, allowing visitors of all faiths to tour the temple and learn about its purpose. Following the open house, a formal dedication will be held, consecrating the building for sacred use.

For members in Huehuetenango, the groundbreaking ceremony represents more than the start of construction—it is the realization of long-held hopes and prayers. As Scarleth De León López expressed, the temple will serve as a spiritual beacon, linking generations past, present, and future in a shared faith in Jesus Christ.
