| A Teacher to the World: Remembering President Jeffrey R. Holland (1940–2025) |
The world grew a little dimmer this weekend as the Church announced the passing of President Jeffrey R. Holland, President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. President Holland passed away on Saturday, December 27, 2025, at the age of 85, following complications from kidney disease.
He was surrounded by his family—a fitting end for a man who spent his life testifying that "love is the most powerful force in the universe."
A Life of Faith and Learning
Known for his "fabulous" gift for teaching, Jeffrey R. Holland’s influence stretched far beyond the pulpit. Before his call to the Apostleship in 1994, he served as:
• Dean of Religious Education at BYU.
• Commissioner of the Church Educational System.
• President of Brigham Young University (1980–1989).
Elder Quentin L. Cook, his mission companion from their youth in England, remarked that even at age 20, there was "nobody better in the Church at teaching."
The "Apostle of Hope"
If there is one hallmark of President Holland’s ministry, it was his ability to reach into the dark corners of the human experience. He spoke openly about mental health, depression, and "psychic blows," offering a level of vulnerability that resonated with millions.
He didn't just teach the gospel; he felt it. Whether he was at Windsor Castle discussing refugee aid or ministering in the streets of Chile, he lived by his favorite scripture:
"Succor the weak, lift up the hands which hang down, and strengthen the feeble knees." (D&C 81:5)
Reunited at Last
President Holland was preceded in death by his beloved wife and "encourager," Patricia Terry Holland, who passed away in July 2023. Their legendary partnership was the bedrock of their family and ministry. He is survived by their three children, 13 grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren.
His Final Witness
In his final years, President Holland’s message remained focused on the "perfect brightness of hope." He leaves behind a legacy of fervent testimony, reminding us all that because of Jesus Christ, "the best things in life are ours if we steadfastly keep believing and keep trying."
