| Fear not, for I am with thee; be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness." — Isaiah 41:10 |
In the quiet moments of service, we often talk about the "sacrifice" of a mission. We speak of two years or eighteen months given to the Lord, of lives set aside to share a message of hope. But sometimes, that sacrifice takes on a form we never anticipated.
Today, our hearts turn toward Elder Hunter Averett, a faithful servant who recently returned home from the Ohio Columbus Mission to face a different kind of battle: a diagnosis of leukemia.
A Mission Interrupted, A New Battle Begun
Hunter served with his whole soul for 14 months, walking the streets of Ohio and touching lives with his testimony. When unusual bruising began to appear, he sought medical attention, leading to a diagnosis that changed everything in an instant.
While his time in the mission field was cut short, his identity as a disciple of Christ has never been more evident. Hunter is now transitioning from the front lines of missionary work to the front lines of a medical fight, preparing for intensive chemotherapy and an upcoming bone marrow transplant.
Our Turn to Serve the Servant
Missionaries are the hands and feet of the Lord. They spend their days lifting the weary and strengthening the feeble knees of strangers who soon become friends. Now, it is our turn to be the hands that lift Hunter.
The Averett family has felt the weight of this trial, but they have also felt the immense peace that comes from a community rooted in faith. To support Hunter in this next phase of his journey, the family has invited all who feel moved to join them in:
- Pervasive Prayer: Pleading for the success of his treatments and the comfort of his spirit.
- A Special Fast: Aligning our physical will with our spiritual desires to petition for a miracle on Hunter’s behalf.
- Unified Support: Showing the Averett family that they do not walk this path alone.
The Strength in the Struggle
We know that the Lord does not abandon His servants. As Elder Jeffrey R. Holland once remarked, "God is eagerly waiting for the chance to answer your prayers and fulfill your dreams, just as He always has." We believe in the power of the Priesthood, the skill of medical professionals, and the undeniable strength of a young man who has already proven his devotion to God. Leukemia is a formidable foe, but it is not more powerful than the collective faith of those who love Hunter.
